Day 9: Previewing Mastodon instances as h-feed #100DaysOfIndieWeb

1 min read

I was watching Christopher try to decide which mastodon instance to join. This made me realise that we need a way to preview instances’ local and federated streams. So I made one: Here's mastodon.social and here's  toot.cafe

How this works is that from mastodon 1.1.1 the public timeline json api no longer needs authentication, so I can read it by default. I do this, then use a tempate to render it as an h-feed compliant view.

I also added a list of known instances from  instances.mastodon.xyz, though I wasn't able to  fetch the list dynamically.

I hope you find a mastodon insatcne community that you like.

Day 8: A specification for rel=canonical, by request #100DaysOfIndieWeb

Domenic pointed out that rel=canonical was not well specified in the HTML spec. We had a stub page on the microformats wiki, so I expanded it into a more detailed discussion.

I tried to follow my mantra that 'standards should be documentation, not legislation' by explaining and linking rather than just writing a list of imperatives without much explanation.

Do let me know what you think

Day 2 Saving webmentioned URLs to archive.org #100DaysOfIndieWeb

1 min read

With many pages vanishing from the web this week, we've been thinking about archiving in

One thing that several people have started to do is to send their posts and the pages they link to to the internet archive

I was already doing this for all SVG's posted to svgshare.com, my vector image sharing site (though I fixed some bugs in that today too).

But what could I do for my other posts? Well, I previously made mention-tech to send webmentions, which is handy for my static posts on kevinmarks.com, so I made it ping the archive for both source and target URLs in the webmention sent. Do try it yourself.

Where is the editor for facebook notes?

1 min read

John Biesnecker posted a note on facebook today that had a banner header and large, readable serif font. However , the "poste by" link goes to 'blog.facebook.com' - is this support for external editors?

If so, that seems an friendly possibility. For now it's just confusing.
